What are dental implants?

Dental implants are screw-like titanium medical devices that are surgically implanted into the jaw bone in order to support a custom-fabricated prosthesis. Much like a natural tooth root, the implant provides strength and stability to the prosthetic crown. An abutment is used to join the crown to the implant.

How much dental implants cost?

One of the first questions you may have if this treatment is recommended to you is ‘How much do dental implants cost?’ For many patients, the cost of having this procedure performed is significant. But, you should keep in mind that dental implants are an investment not only towards your oral but also your overall health.

The average cost to have a dental implant placed and restored with a dental crown in the United States can range from $2500 to $5000. There are factors that will influence the final cost, such as the materials selected and the complexity of the procedure. If your bone and tissue grafting is necessary, then these may increase the total cost of the procedure.

If you are looking to replace a full set of teeth or just one arch, the cost can increase to $20,000 or more for a full-arch implant-supported bridge.

To help ease the financial burden on patients, MiraMar Family Dental offers third-party financing options through the Cherry platform.

What is the process for dental implants

If your dentist recommend dental implants, you may be wondering what the process entails. Your journey to a renewed smile begins with a consultation. You have several options in terms of dental crown material and we will discuss the pros and cons of each.

If you and your dentist decide dental implants are the right treatment for you, we will provide you with information to help prepare you for the procedure. Following these instructions is essential to preventing complications and ensuring the longevity of your dental implants. Prior to the procedure, your dentist will most likely prescribe antibiotics. As smoking and vaping negatively affect the success of dental implant procedures, we will likely recommend cessation therapies prior to surgery.

All depending on your oral health, the quality of jaw bone available, and other factors, we may be able to place the implant and restore it with a temporary crown in one visit.

Extractions

If an infected tooth is being extracted, an implant can often be placed the same day. Impressions will then be taken of your mouth to ensure optimal implant and restoration positioning.

The day of surgery

On the day of surgery, a local anesthetic will be administered. You may also receive some form of sedative so you are comfortable for the duration of the procedure.

placing the implant

To place the dental implant, the dentist will make an incision into the gums. A surgical drill is then used to create an osteotomy in the jaw bone. The dental implant will then be torqued (screwed) into the bone until ideal stability is achieved. In this stage, the implant is essentially held in place by friction between the implant and bone. The bone will further integrate with the implant in a process called "osseointegration.&am ;quot; If the dentist determines the jaw bone is less dense than anticipated, they will likely delay loading the implant with a prosthesis (dental crown) until the bone has more time to integrate with the implant. The dentist will then schedule you in for a follow-up visit in several months.

aftercare

If sedation was used, you will likely feel somewhat groggy for several hours following the procedure. We will let you know if you should have someone drive you to and from your appointment. Once the procedure is complete, your care team will advise you on what foods you can eat. It’s important to stick with soft foods to ensure the surgical site remains undisturbed as the bone integrates with the dental implant.

All-on-4 Dental Implants

All-on-4 dental implants, or All-on-X dental implants,” is a procedure that uses as few as four dental implants to support a fixed full-arch bridge. When compared to replacing each individual tooth with an implant-supported dental crown, All-on-4 is seen as an economical, efficient, and patient-friendly way to replace a full arch or “row” of teeth.

Thanks to advanced materials, such as zirconia, the results are absolutely incredible. One of the amazing benefits of this technique is that it’s even suitable for patients with significant bone resorption in the maxilla (upper arch) as the bridge can be held in place by implants placed in the ygomatic bone.
