What Is Deep dental cleaning or Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing (SRP) is a non-surgical gum treatment designed to remove plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline. This helps eliminate harmful bacteria, allowing your gums to heal and reattach to your teeth. It also helpful in smoothing out tooth surfaces to help limit bacterial attachment.

It’s important to note that once calculus (tartar) has formed on tooth surfaces, it cannot be removed by brushing or flossing; it requires specialized tools and a skilled hand.

Think of it as a ”deep clean“ for your mouth – especially in places a toothbrush and floss just can’t reach.

Ask us about financing

When is deep dental cleaning or SRP Recommended?

Our team may recommend scaling and root planing (SRP) if you experience any of the following:

bad-smell-hygiene-healthcare

Chronic bad breath (halitosis)

Red, swollen, or bleeding gums

Gum recession or “long” teeth

Pockets forming between teeth and gums

Loose or shifting teeth

These are all signs of periodontitis – a more advanced form of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss and other complications if left untreated.

What Happens During a deep cleaning or Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?

Examination

We’ll begin by gently measuring the depth of your gum pockets to assess the severity of the disease.

Scaling

Using special instruments such as a dental scaler, we remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline.

Root Planing

The roots are then smoothed, making it harder for bacteria to stick and giving your gums a chance to heal.

Local anesthetic (if needed)

To ensure your comfort, we may numb the area being treated.

How long does it take?

While scaling and root planing can typically be completed in one or two visits, it’s also not uncommon to require three or visits, all depending on the extent of the buildup and the areas being treated.

Aftercare and recovery

You will likely experience some soreness or sensitivity along your gums for the next few days. This is completely normal. We may recommend a prescription mouth rinse or antibiotics.

Good oral hygiene and regular follow-up visits are essential to long-term success. At the end of your visit, we will recommend a follow-up schedule best suited to your oral health requirements.

Why a deep dental cleaning or SRP Matters

Gum disease is linked to systemic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. By treating your condition early with SRP, you’re not just saving your smile – you’re supporting your overall health.
